First Church of Christ, Scientist. Two-story, stuccoed, Mission Style/Renaissance Revival church. Elegant Renaissance and Mediterranean-inspired building block with a Greek Cross plan, dominated by a low central dome and four projecting gable-roofed arms of the sanctuary extending in each direction, all with red tile roofs. A formal line of five doorways lead into a shed-roofed vestibule area, each with round arches and keystones, and separated by paired pilasters executed in stucco. Between the sidewalk and church, which is set back, a wide plaza paved with red brick is set in classical patterns. The stately, chaste interior, reflective of the cool, Classical aesthetic favored by the denomination, features a coffered ceiling and cast metal chandeliers by the Tiffany Studios. Excellent example of its style and the work of nationally important architects. 1 Contributing.
